Caws Teifi Cheese Biomass Installation

In a commitment to green energy being used as much as possible, Caws Teifi Cheese and Damhile distillery www.teificheese.co.uk located near Llandysul has embarked on a multi- stage project with the eventual outcome of significantly reducing the carbon footprint of all its residential and commercial buildings. Stage 1 of the project, a Biotech 164kW wood chip boiler Biofutures Ltd will financially benefit the occupiers/owners with lower fuel costs and higher heating efficiency while it also qualifies for the government’s RHI scheme.

Caws Teifi Cheee Biomass Installation Case Study

The business has started the transition to greener energy with the initial three buildings (residential/commercial/processes) being heated using biomass boilers that are supplied with wood chips from local woodland. The second stage will be to connect a new shop/customer services building to the insulated below ground pipes that have already been laid ready for this future phase. The Biotech biomass system will cost around 50% less a year to fuel than the previous system as well as dramatically reducing the annual carbon emissions by a significant amount.

John Savage, owner, commented “During the planning stages of this project it was essential that we not only wanted a reliable and efficient heating system but one that would sit comfortably with the residential and commercial uses on the farm. Biotech’s biomass boiler were decided upon as the best fitting solution and following the successful installation we would not hesitate in recommending them or the local UK distributors/installers, Biofutures Ltd.”

The 164kW wood chip Biotech boiler has been installed in a purpose built plant room and silo building. The system has the ability to cope with the fluctuating heating requirements with wide modulating output ranges for the highest efficiencies. The installation also has water to air heat exchangers that directs hot air into the wood chip silo assisting with lowering moisture content in the wood chip. A 5000 litre buffer tank is fed from the boiler to ensure a large constant stored supply of hot water for the domestic and commercial properties needs and maximising efficiency by reducing wasted hot water production.

The wood chip storage is situated next door to the boiler with the boiler being fed by bespoke individual delivery system.

Kedrick Davies of Biofutures commented on the project, “The aim of the project was to give the owners a cheaper source of heating with an ultimate goal of eventually achieving a carbon neutral business/community. The Biotech wood chip system was specified after careful discussion with the owners as I have worked with many biomass boilers for various types of installations and have found that Biotech are superior to other brands in quality, design and the back up service as well as generally being more competitive price wise than other Austrian manufactured biomass systems. The installation at Teifi Cheese was completed before the RHI degression and although a large and complicated scheme was completed satisfactorily and the client is pleased with the end result”.
